Managing and Artistic Director Shannon Forsell was showcased in this article by David Hoppe from Nuvo in January 2011.
Since I sang in the class last week, I had this week of and was observing the rest of the class participants. The singers had everything to work on from comic timing and interpretation, to making the audience believe them, to song and intensity build-up.
This week at the class, everyone has a chance to perform their selected piece in front of everyone. At the beginning of the class we talked about presenting your piece. An important aspect of Cabaret is story-telling and the spoken aspect of the show. Shannon talked about creating an introduction for the song, including contextual information like the composer, show, and context of the piece. She said “ you have to know where you are coming from, to know where you are going.”
Unfortunately, due to a travel mishap, Shannon was unable to make the class this evening. Brent decided to schedule out the evening in segments, focusing on the learning and recording the song, so that we would be able to start performing our songs memorized in front of the class next week. Since I am helping out with the class, I got to be there for the entire time and listen to each of the singers. It was great to hear everyone's choice of song. They are all so different. It will be interesting to hear the progress they make throughout the class.
