The Columbia Club, initially a private Republican club of Indianapolis’ most distinguished residents, originated in 1888, with its clubhouse built in 1889. The objective of the Harrison Marching Society – as the members were known – was to support the election of General Benjamin Harrison as the 23rd president of the United States of America. The current 10-story limestone building overlooking downtown’s Monument Circle was erected in 1925 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

According to Monika Herzig, one of the driving forces behind Divine Divas of Jazz, presented Thursday by ISIS of Indiana and the Cabaret at the Columbia Club, women account for only 3 percent of all professional jazz musicians. A musician and recording artist, Herzig also holds a doctorate in music education and jazz studies at Indiana University, where she is now a faculty member, and knows about the subject firsthand.

My review is centered on my experience attending a recent performance of The Cabaret, located in the Crystal Terrace of the Columbia Club, overlooking the nighttime ambiance of Monument Circle.

Playing loving tribute to legendary jazz singer Mel Tormé, Billy Stritch enthralled his audience Friday evening at the Cabaret at the Columbia Club, in downtown Indianapolis, in his show, “Billy Stritch Sings Mel Tormé.”

"Awesome venue! I tell everyone I know about The Cabaret and encourage them to see a show."
