The Cabaret’s 2026-2030 Strategic Plan

The Cabaret is deeply grateful to Lilly Endowment for its generous support of our 2025 strategic planning process. This investment made possible the most comprehensive and inclusive planning effort in our organization’s history and has produced a bold, actionable roadmap that will guide The Cabaret into its “Next Level” era. This plan is also especially significant as our first full strategic plan developed post‑pandemic, informed by seven years of operating experience in our current venue and grounded in the realities and opportunities of the current arts landscape.

The resulting 2026–2030 Strategic Plan positions The Cabaret to increase its artistic and educational impact, strengthen community relevance, and ensure long‑term sustainability as we look ahead to our 20th Anniversary Season in 2029. The Plan was approved and adopted by The Cabaret’s Board of Directors on February 10, 2026.

Planning Process Overview

With Lilly Endowment’s generous grant support, The Cabaret engaged Cape Fletcher to facilitate a thorough and inclusive planning process. What began as an anticipated refresh quickly revealed some transformative opportunities for our future. Consistent with the cabaret art form, the process was intentionally interactive and centered on gathering broad stakeholder input reflective of our community.

Key components of the planning process included:

  • Five listening sessions with staff, board, donors, students, community partners, and vendors.
  • 41 one‑on‑one or small‑group stakeholder interviews.
  • A community‑wide survey with strong engagement from 354 participants, including attendees (92%), donors (34%), Alley concert attendees (21%), and students (7%).
  • Staff‑led and consultant‑led SWOT analyses examining strengths, opportunities, and risks.

This depth of engagement surfaced consistent themes about what makes The Cabaret extraordinary—our intimacy, artistic quality, culture of radical hospitality, and inclusive programming—while clarifying the organizational investments and innovations needed to achieve “next level” excellence as well as long-term relevance and sustainability.

Key Findings

Stakeholders overwhelmingly affirmed the importance of preserving our unique “up‑close and personal” experience, the caliber and mix of artists we present, and our signature culture of genuine warmth and belonging. The process also revealed strong consensus around organizational priorities, including:

  • Strengthening staff capacity to sustain excellence and support future growth.
  • Increasing visibility to move beyond “hidden gem” status and reach broader, more diverse audiences.
  • Expanding artist development and educational programs with a focus on historically underserved students.
  • Enhancing internal systems, data-informed decision-making, and organizational resilience.
  • Exploring long‑term venue stability—including the potential for facility ownership.

These insights shaped the structure and aspirations of the final plan.

Highlights of the 2026-2030 Strategic Plan

The plan is organized around five “Next Level” themes:

  • Artistic Excellence & Experience – preserving and elevating the world‑class artist and audience experience that defines The Cabaret.
  • Operational Excellence – upgrading systems, staff capacity, and culture to sustain best‑in‑class hospitality.
  • Educational & Community Impact – significantly expanding partnerships and signature programs to deepen our impact with students and emerging artists.
  • Sustainability – exploring venue ownership, strengthening major gifts and endowment, and planning for leadership succession.
  • Storytelling – amplifying visibility, celebrating artists, and strengthening engagement pathways.

Key outcomes we aim to achieve by 2030 include more diverse and engaged audiences and artists; expanded education and talent pipelines; successful capital and major‑gifts growth; increased visibility as a cultural anchor locally and industry leader nationally; and intentional succession planning to secure long‑term artistic and organizational continuity.

We’re ready to take things to the next level.

The Cabaret now moves into its next chapter with renewed clarity, vision, and confidence – grounded in community input and guided by a bold roadmap for growth, equity, artistic excellence, and sustainability.

We are honored to share the approved and adopted 2026–2030 Strategic Plan and look forward to working to deepen our mission impact and ensure that The Cabaret thrives for decades to come.

“The peak cabaret experience is a three-way relationship among singer, song and audience in which performers with formidable acting skills, whose interpretations make you hear songs as though for the first time, pour their life experiences in thematic shows.  In the shouting, brawling world of mainstream pop, the essential qualities of a cabaret performance — intimacy, emotional vulnerability and interpretive subtlety have little place.”
