Three-time Tony nominee and star of Hamilton and Carousel, Joshua Henry performs an intimate evening of Broadway and soul classics. Henry will share “unplugged” interpretations and musical mashups from some of his favorite musicals as well as soulful originals, R&B, and more.
Henry made his stage debut as Judas in Godspell at the Paper Mill Playhouse, followed by his Broadway debut in In the Heights. After playing Favorite Son in American Idiot, he gave Tony-nominated performances in The Scottsboro Boys and Violet. He also appeared in the Broadway revival of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, Bring It On: The Musical, and Shuffle Along (alongside Audra McDonald_. He most recently starred as Aaron Burr in the Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles companies of the hit musical, Hamilton. On screen, Henry is remembered as Jennifer Hudson’s fiancé in Sex and the City.
About Joshua Henry
JOSHUA HENRY most recently appeared as Billy Bigelow in Scott Rudin’s Broadway revival of Carousel. Henry also appeared as Aaron Burr in the Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles companies of the hit musical, Hamilton. On his turn as Burr, Entertainment Weekly wrote “Undoubtedly, this production, stellar as it is, belongs to its would-be villain Aaron Burr. . . no one will play this role better.” After graduation from the University of Miami he made his professional acting debut as Judas in a regional production in Godspell, where he went on to join the original off-Broadway and Broadway companies of of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning Best Musical, In the Heights. He continued to appear in the off-Broadway production of Serenade; as the Tin Man in New York City Center’s production of The Wiz, and originating the role of Favorite Son in Green Day’s American Idiot on Broadway.
Henry earned his first Tony-nomination (Best Actor in a Musical) in 2011 for his role as Haywood Patterson in The Scottsboro Boys. The New York Times praised his, “Performance of keen intensity,” while the Los Angeles Times wrote that his, “Powerhouse performance… gives this dazzling, envelope-pushing show a beautiful gravity.” He appeared in American Repertory Theater’s production of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, opening in Cambridge, Massachusetts before moving to Broadway.
In 2014 he portrayed aspirational soldier Flick in the Roundabout Theatre production of Violet, earning his second Best Actor Tony-nomination. For Joshua Henry, 2016 would be a watershed year. It began with his casting as Noble Sissle in Music Box Theatre’s Shuffle Along or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed.
In addition to performing songs in myriad galas, benefits and other special events, Henry contributed original music to the 2009 off-Broadway musical Shafrika, The White Girl at the Vineyard Theatre. Beyond the stage, he has been seen in television guest spots on Kings, Nip/Tuck, the Lifetime series, Army Wives, and in feature films such as The Lake, Sex and the City, and Winter’s Tale.
