It’s a new year and with that comes with change, which can be hard but this is one I’m excited about. The Cabaret is back and you all know how strongly I feel about the Cabaret. I love it and I love to support it. I should really say that WE love to support it. Especially since Juan has just joined the board.
The change is the fact that the Cabaret is in a new venue. The Cabaret is now performing in the Cook Theater at Indiana Landmarks. It’s a very cool space with a proper stage. Beautiful ceiling, great sightlines, terrific acoustics.
I approve of the Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc. That’s a major plus. The catering and drink options have been elevated in a big way.
But the thing that remains the same is the talent. Which is second to none. The 2017 season was kicked off with a performance by Brian Stokes Mitchell. Some of you may know him from his role on Trapper John MD in the late 70s and early 80s. Others of you may know him from his very current role on Mr. Robot. But the thing that you really should know him for is a very storied Broadway career.
Stokes, as his friends call him, has starred in just about everything. Kiss Me Kate, Man of La Mancha, Ragtime, Shuffle Along…..and on and on and on.
This man is a performer. He really knows how to work the stage and the room and the crowd. He did 90 minutes and it was over in a blink. I was completely engaged and the show flew by in a very good way.
It was another magical evening of song. As per usual, I got a little misty. This time it was during The Impossible Dream from Man of La Mancha. Mr. Brian Stokes Mitchell is made for that show. He’s who I see when I think of Don Quioxte.
I’m excited for the Winter/Spring season. It’s an amazing lineup of terrific performers. But in an odd twist Juan is traveling for work for two of the shows. That was a big disappointment this weekend. Juan wasn’t able to go and this is kind of our thing. But I brought our dear friend Culleen and we had a little date night, which was wonderful. I’m bringing Cowgirl to the Judy Kuhn show in March when Juan is away at SXSW in Austin.
But I will not miss any of the shows. I’ll be there with bells on. Just like always. That’s how much I care.
